The number of 5-star reviews needed depends on three things: your current average rating, your total review count, and your target rating. Here is the formula:
For example, if you have a 3.8 rating with 40 reviews and want to reach 4.5 stars:
Current total stars = 3.8 × 40 = 152
Reviews needed = (4.5 × 40 − 152) ÷ (5 − 4.5)
= (180 − 152) ÷ 0.5
= 28 ÷ 0.5 = 56 five-star reviews
The key insight: the closer your target is to 5.0, the exponentially harder it gets. Going from 4.0 to 4.5 is much easier than going from 4.5 to 4.8.

It depends on how many reviews you already have. A business with 10 reviews at 3.0 stars needs about 5 five-star reviews to reach 4.0. But a business with 100 reviews at 3.0 stars needs about 50 five-star reviews to reach 4.0. The more reviews you have, the harder it is to move your average.
With 20 existing reviews: about 5 new 5-star reviews. With 50 reviews: about 13. With 100 reviews: about 25. With 500 reviews: about 125. Use the calculator above to get the exact number for your business.
Each new review's impact on your average decreases as your total review count grows. This is basic averaging math: with 10 reviews, one new review is 10% of your total. With 100 reviews, it's only 1%. This is why it's important to start collecting positive reviews early, while each one has maximum impact.
Mathematically, no. If you have even one review below 5 stars, your average will always be less than 5.0. However, you can get very close (e.g., 4.9) with enough 5-star reviews. A 4.7-4.9 rating is actually more trustworthy to consumers than a perfect 5.0, which can seem suspicious.
That depends on how quickly you collect new reviews. If you get 1 review per week and need 25 five-star reviews, it will take about 25 weeks. ReviewSense can help accelerate this by automatically sending review requests to customers at the right time.
